Southern Lingo… and other various things…
Good news and bad news… Bad news first: the only coffee shop in Jesup has closed up. We now have an hour to the nearest coffee shop of any kind.
Good news: a Starbucks just opened up in Brunswick!! Although it is a good hour away, Ben and I just had to stop in to try a caramel frap with an extra shot of espresso. As usual, I wasn’t disappointed.
[Before this, the nearest Starbucks was 1.5 hours away].
Baby Names: a lot more difficult than I ever imagined. It feels like we’re getting no where! Girl names are especially hard, although they’re also the cutest. I was in a strange mood the other night when Ben and I were talking about names, and discussing how “the books say” you must always check so the initials won’t say anything wierd. There is a name that starts with an I that we like, and I started giggling and suggested we name the baby’s middle name “Wonder” so that his initials will be “I. Wonder Y.” As Ken Davis says, “Lighten up, and LIVE!”
Not that Ken Davis is my hero or anything…
Now for the Southern Lingo…
…that I once thought was strange but now find myself saying
…and other amusing cultural thingsMight should: “I might should clean up the garage.”
Along and along: “We’re fixing up the house along and along” [means as we're able]
Yankees: Anyone present day from farther north than Maryland, not necessarily a soldier from a particular war 150 years ago [yes, I am called this quite often]
Ya’ll: used to refer to more than one person in conversation
Baby: Not necessarily an infant, but a term used to speak with affection to people of all ages
Redneck: a title to be proud of, a social status of respect and dignity [there really are some cultured rednecks, as strange an oxymoron as that sounds!]
Chivalry: “went out with the hoop skirts” according to a 7th grade student! [whatever happened to the Southern gentleman??]
Dis, dem, der: used instead of this, them, there, and any attempt to correct a student [quote], You can’t take away my heritage!!” [end quote]
Fixin’ to: “I’m fixin’ to leave” [getting ready to]
Bless their hearts: You can say anything about anyone, as long as you end with this line. It kind of cancels out all other negative saidIt still may be the United States, but sometimes it still feels like a totally different country!!

LOL! well, except i’m not so sure ’bout dat der ’chivalry’ style! LOL! in response to your comment…yah, buyin’ new clothes along and along…dat’s what happens when you haven’t seen me or come to pa since the dark ages…SNIFF!!! hardly see my own sisters here, the way it is- they have more of a social life than i do these days! so…when you come this summer, i’m sure there’ll be lots of kodak moments for you to be on xanga too!

So good to see you and Ben at the wedding. Ya’ll are as cute as ever
Hope to see the new addition next time!
I love your post !! gotta love them there in the south!
hey, hey, hey . . . loved both of your last posts! i have a *dream* about where you could live while you’re here, but have no idea if it would actually work. i’ll let you know after i talk to someone . . . oh, and i’m kind of jealous of your ultrasound experience! sometimes i’d like to do one too . . . but just decided not to so far. many hugs.
like the southern lingo!!! =)
zach and i are officially using “bless their hears” after most of our sentences. =P
i mean ‘hearts’
=P
um. you need to come home soon.
oh wait. you are. in two weeks. YAY!
i really hate this whole far-away-from-family deal. it makes me sad. but maybe you’ll like it up here so much this summer that you’ll decide to stay… i don’t think anyone would argue. you could have my room! *giggles*
i love you.
congrats on your upcoming baby! i’m sure you will make a wonderful, and very cute little momma. hope the name-choosing thing ends with the perfect one…it’s a big job! and i hope you have a wonderful time with your family on your upcoming visit. my sister just got married on saturday, and i am suffering ‘withdrawal’, and they are going to live 15 minutes away! i cant imagine how hard it would be if she moved far away…so i hope that your time as sisters is wonderful…i dont know your sisters, i hardly know you, but i kinda like ‘watching’ you guys on xanga. does that make you feel weird?
dont. it’s just very obvious that you have a very close sister-bond, and that is so refreshing to see!
thanks for the kind comment. I can’t tell you how excited I am to see you next week!!! I may not even recognize you…jk! See you then!!!!
I love your take on the southern lingo! After living here most of my life I kind of forget about it and it so interesting to hear it from the perspective of those “transplanted” to the south!
I can see from the 3rd paragraph above that I need to get that name book back for you!!! Cute idea, though!
Have fun sleeping as late as you can (except for that whole making-lunch-for-the-hubby deal!
Tonight was a hoot!!
hee hee…chuckle…smile…grin…somebody’s visiting this weekend…*scream*…just thought i had to let you know…it makes me smile just to think of it…:):)
ps: tips for baby names…why should it be that difficult? i mean, all you have to do is name it after it’s fava-aunt, & that solves the whole problem…lol! (that is, if it’s a girl! lol!)
um… jan dear… you forgot the s at the end of aunt. it should be changed to plural. as in… aunts. like, more than one. as in me too. yeah. :]
i’m still smiling from hearing your voice a few minutes ago… even if you didn’t understand everything on our end, we were having fun communicating. :]
